What To Do in a Medical Emergency in Mexico (Save This)

What to do in a medical emergency in Mexico: dial 911, reach carrier assistance, pick private hospitals, pay with direct-pay insurance, and evacuate safely.

Nobody plans an emergency, which is why having the sequence memorized matters. Save this page or screenshot the five steps below before your Mexico trip.

Prefer a printed card? Download the free Mexico Emergency Medical Wallet Card (PDF) — 911, carrier hotlines, emergency Spanish phrases, and space for your policy details.

Step 1 — Dial 911 (or Use Your Resort/Hotel First)

Mexico's national emergency number is 911 — the same as the US and Canada. In major tourist areas (Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen) operators speak English. If you are staying at a major resort, hotel security or the front desk will often dispatch a private ambulance faster and translate.

Step 2 — Call Your Carrier's 24/7 Assistance Hotline

This is the step most people miss. GeoBlue, Trawick International, and IMG all print a 24/7 assistance number on your insurance ID card. Calling them immediately (before accepting an expensive hospital) does three critical things: they direct you to a contracted direct-pay hospital; they issue a payment guarantee so the hospital does not demand cash upfront; and they begin coordinating evacuation logistics if needed.

Step 3 — Go to a Private Hospital, Not IMSS

Public IMSS hospitals are for enrolled residents and suffer from long waits and mostly Spanish-only staff. Foreigners should always head to an accredited private hospital (Star Médica, Ángeles, Hospiten, San Javier, AMC, Galenia, ABC, etc.). Find the top private hospitals for 30 Mexico destinations in our city guides.

Step 4 — Present Insurance ID + Claim Assistance

Hand the hospital your insurance card. With an active direct-pay policy, the carrier coordinates payment with the hospital billing department directly. You pay only your deductible (or nothing on $0-deductible plans). Keep every receipt, discharge summary, and test result.

Step 5 — Evacuation, If Warranted

If local facilities are inadequate, the attending physician and your carrier's medical director authorize evacuation. The carrier's assistance team coordinates the entire process — air ambulance, ground transport, admissions — and pays directly. Every policy we sell includes evacuation benefits.
