If you take daily medication, had a recent procedure, or manage a chronic condition, you can still get excellent Mexico health insurance. What you cannot do is hide it: undisclosed pre-existing conditions are the single most common reason travel-insurance claims are denied. Here is the straight, carrier-by-carrier truth.
What Counts as a Pre-Existing Condition
Generally: any medical condition for which you received advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment (including taking prescribed medications) within the lookback period specified by the policy — often 60–180 days before the effective date, sometimes longer for expat policies. A stable, well-managed condition that has required no treatment changes still counts.
The Three Ways You Can Still Be Covered
- 1. Acute-onset benefits (short-term travel plans): Trawick International and IMG plans include benefits for the sudden, unexpected recurrence of an existing condition while abroad. This covers emergencies that flare up without warning.
- 2. Stability waivers: some plans cover pre-existing conditions provided the condition was medically stable (no new medications, no worsening symptoms) for 30–90 days before departure.
- 3. Explicit underwriting (expat health plans): GeoBlue Xplorer and IMG Global Medical invite you to disclose conditions up front; the carrier prices or excludes each condition explicitly so you know exactly where you stand before anything happens.
The Two Rules That Protect You
First, disclose everything. Omitting a medication can void the entire claim — not just the portion related to that medication. Second, buy through a broker who knows the carrier fine print. We routinely match people with pre-existing conditions to the specific carrier whose riders treat those conditions most favorably — a service that costs you nothing because we are compensated by the carrier.
Medicare-Age Travelers
Because Medicare covers zero care in Mexico, pre-existing-condition strategy is twice as important for seniors. See our snowbirds and seniors page and consider an expat health policy with explicit underwriting if you spend three or more months in Mexico per year.
